The Stellar Parallax and Aberration Package is an interactive, self-contained educational software package hosted on the ComPADRE Digital Library. Created by physics and astronomy educator Todd Timberlake, it is designed to teach students how the Earth’s motion through space alters our visual observations of the stars.

The curriculum package combines interactive Easy Java Simulations (EJS) with structured student lab activities to explore historical milestones in astrophysics. Core Curricular Components

Activity 1: Astronomical ParallaxThis unit guides students through an investigation of diurnal (daily) and annual (yearly) parallax. It focuses heavily on the historical context of the heliocentric model, specifically looking at Robert Hooke’s early, unsuccessful attempts to prove Earth’s orbit by measuring how nearby stars shifted against distant background stars.

Activity 2: Stellar AberrationThis unit tracks the work of astronomer James Bradley, who attempted to replicate Hooke’s measurements. Instead of finding parallax, Bradley discovered an entirely unexpected cyclical 20-arcsecond shift caused by the combination of Earth’s orbital speed and the finite speed of light. Custom Control Adjustments: Users can manually adjust the target star’s celestial coordinates, its distance from the Sun, and the specific day of the year (solstices/equinoxes) to observe immediate changes in the star’s apparent path.

Sky View Comparison: The simulation provides side-by-side graphical windows. An open white circle visualizes the star’s “true position,” while a magenta disk displays its “apparent position” as skewed by Earth’s location and velocity.
