Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006 is a legacy, integrated network security gateway. It was designed by Microsoft to serve as an enterprise application-layer firewall, web proxy, and virtual private network (VPN) server. Running natively on Windows Server 2003, it helped medium-to-large businesses protect their internal IT environments while accelerating web performance through caching.
Since it is a legacy product, Microsoft later replaced it with Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG), which has also been discontinued. Core Features
ISA Server 2006 combined several security and network tools into one centralized management console:
Application-Layer Firewall: Unlike simple packet-filtering firewalls, ISA Server performed deep inspection of network protocols like HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP. This allowed it to detect anomalies, malicious code, and web-based application threats.
Web Caching & Proxy: It acted as a secure web proxy. It cached frequently accessed internet pages locally. When internal users requested those sites, ISA served the cached copy instantly, reducing external bandwidth usage.
Secure Application Publishing: It was heavily used to securely expose internal Microsoft services to the internet, such as Microsoft Exchange and Outlook Web Access (OWA). It handled incoming Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) bridging, forms-based authentication, and deep data inspection before passing traffic to internal servers.
VPN Gateway: It supported both client-to-site and site-to-site VPN tunnels. For site-to-site links, it introduced stateful filtering across the VPN, giving administrators granular control over what specific remote hosts could access on the corporate network.
Worm and Flood Protection: It featured built-in mechanisms to block Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and generic network flood traffic, mitigating worm propagation inside the perimeter. Integration and System Requirements
