WinDFT (HGST Drive Fitness Test) vs. Other Free Hard Drive Diagnostic Tools

WinDFT (Windows Drive Fitness Test) is a dedicated hard drive diagnostic utility originally developed by Hitachi (now HGST, a Western Digital company). It allows you to run non-destructive read tests, check SMART health logs, and wipe data on internal or external hard drives.

The most critical rule of WinDFT is that it cannot scan the primary drive containing your running Windows operating system. You can only use it to test secondary internal drives, external USB drives, or drives connected to another computer. 🛠️ Core Steps to Use WinDFT 1. Installation

Download the utility from an authorized software repository or Western Digital’s Legacy Support documentation.

Extract the installer files, right-click Setup.exe, and select Run as Administrator.

Complete the setup wizard by following the prompt instructions. 2. Scan and Detect Drives

Right-click the installed WinDFT shortcut and choose Run as Administrator.

The utility automatically scans your system for compatible hard drives.

Unsupported drives (or your active C: boot drive) will trigger a warning or simply will not appear in the drive list.

If a secondary drive is attached but missing from the list, click the Scan button to force a refresh. 3. View SMART Health Status

Look at the lower pane of the window where your recognized drives are displayed.

Double-click on any listed drive to pull up its internal SMART status data window. This gives you an immediate health overview, including metrics like power-on hours and sector reallocation history. 4. Execute Diagnostic Tests

Select your target drive checkbox, then choose one of the two primary diagnostic modes:

Quick Test: Runs a fast, surface-level read scan that finishes within a few minutes. It is best used for a rapid check if a drive is acting up.

Ext Test (Extended Test): Conducts a thorough, sector-by-sector read analysis of the entire drive storage capacity. This takes significantly longer (potentially several hours for large mechanical drives) but is much more reliable at catching bad sectors. 5. Additional Utilities (Optional) Click the Utilities button to access advanced functions.

From this sub-menu, you can completely overwrite or erase data on the drive by selecting options like Erase Boot Sector or Clean Drive. Warning: Doing this permanently deletes all files on that drive. ⚠️ Important Limitations to Keep in Mind WinDFT (HGST Drive Fitness Test) – Download
